New Dad, New Business, New World
"Life's challenges are not supposed to paralyze you, they're supposed to help you discover who you are." - Bernice Johnson Reagon
On February 22, 2020 we had our beautiful son Kyle Zenji Ogata. KZO was a small guy with a big heart born just under 5lbs. I took time off from work to be present with my newborn.
The plan was to take a month off then get back to work immediately. As the month came around, there was the announcement for everyone to shelter in place to contain COVID-19. So much uncertainty was going through my mind, I’m already 1 month in the hole without making income. Video production is at a complete standstill and having no income for an indefinite amount of time was frightening. When will I work again, will my family be okay?
With so much uncertainty, I turned to my other family, my Flipbird crew for guidance. Our advisor Young Han made a strategy to help us push forward to build our company through the pandemic while looking for as many opportunities to generate income. He kept his message simple, shake off the shock, make a plan and execute.
As dandy as the message was, I was exhausted with caring for a newborn while pushing myself to be more disciplined in new systems and processes that were foreign to me as a serial freelancer. This meant being more reliable to my team, better reports of my progress and communication. Young, Jordan, and Zo all challenged me to succeed. I tried to keep it together but there were many times where my head just wasn’t there.
Weekly meetings with my team, 1 on 1’s with Young encouraged me to step up my contributions. I was having issues determining where I can best help the company grow. How do I pull my own weight while physically caring for my family? I was trying my best but feeling failure in most of my efforts.
Fortunately, I found my groove in marketing and developing our inbound marketing engine. This gave me room to grow and an outlet for all my creativity. I started to find my place in the company, I was able to do something outside of my developed skills as a videographer. I received recognition as our marketing outreach sparked more engagement and eventually leads
We kept our heads down on the grind, we revamped our website and continued to spread our message, “Flock with us.” We also built a sales engine to generate more leads. Our momentum grew, we received more video projects.
I’ve learned so much during these challenging times, you can really do anything if you stick with it. Nothing develops without hardwork and discipline. I am grateful to have my family and team members who all believed and pushed me more than I could ever imagine. My life is more balanced, my son is now 6 months old and Flipbird Films is flourishing. I will proudly watch my son and company grow to do great things. Our projects are flourishing while we keep our message clear, “We specialize in storytelling to move the masses. Flock with us, if you dare”
